Percentage Increase Calculator
Percentage increase measures how much a value has grown, relative to where it started. It's the standard way to describe growth in price, salary, population or any quantity that changes over time.
The formula
increase (%) = ((new value − original value) ÷ original value) × 100
Worked example
A price moves from $80 to $100:
(100 − 80) ÷ 80 × 100 = 25%
The price increased by 25%.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate percentage increase?
Subtract the original value from the new value, divide by the original value, then multiply by 100. Going from 80 to 100 is a 25% increase.
What if the new number is smaller than the original?
The result will be negative, which represents a decrease rather than an increase. Use the Percentage Decrease Calculator if you want the result shown as a positive decrease figure.
Is percentage increase the same as percentage points?
No. Percentage increase is relative to the original value. Percentage points are a flat difference between two percentages — going from 20% to 25% is a 5 percentage point increase, but a 25% percentage increase.
