room area = length × width
total needed = room area × (1 + waste %)
Worked example
A 15 ft × 12 ft room with a 10% waste allowance:
room area = 15 × 12 = 180 sq ft
total needed = 180 × 1.10 = 198 sq ft
Frequently asked questions
Why do I need to add extra for waste when ordering flooring?
Cutting flooring to fit around edges, corners, doorways, and pattern matching (especially with tile or plank flooring) creates offcuts that can't be reused, so a waste allowance ensures you don't run short mid-installation.
How much waste should I add?
A common rule of thumb is 10% for simple rectangular rooms, and up to 15–20% for rooms with lots of corners, diagonal layouts, or patterned materials like herringbone.
Does this account for closets or irregular room shapes?
No — this calculator assumes a simple rectangular area. For irregular rooms, split the space into rectangular sections, calculate each separately, and add the totals together before applying your waste allowance.
